In 1996, working in UL's Foundation Building with several research group side by side in an open plan environment, I was inspired by the dancers in the Irish World Music Centre (our neighbours). This led to a resarch question: how to capture Irish tap dancing. As a design exploration, the LiteFoot interactive dance floor was developed.

  • Size 2 x 2 meters
  • 40 millimetres resolution
  • 2000 optical proximity sensors
  • Sampling rate 100 Hz
  • Arbitrary mapping of movement to sounds and visuals
  • Data captured for further analysis

LiteFoot premiered at IWMC's Toyota concert in 1997 and was also included as a feature in RTÉ's Late Late Christmas show.
